I watched a flat earth documentary over the weekend. It was....fascinating. Not because I now think the Earth is flat but the people are so deep into it there is no way out for them.
Anyway, the documentary concludes with an experiment that would prove the Earth is flat or curved. It’s based on light and a few holes in a barrier x’ above the ground. The experiment is really quite well thought out, surprisingly. The experiment showed that Earth was indeed round with the flat earther saying “Interesting.”
So there you have it. Flat E arth documentary has proved the Earth isn’t flat.
Keep it flat my friends. Fight the good fight.

Of course there’s no way out. You can’t fix such an indescribable level of stupidity.

You know who are just as crazy as Flat Earthers? P eople who believe in Cultural Layer. I can barely explain it, but essentially they think that most major cities, including US cities, are built on top of some ancient long forgotten cities that were covered in a mud flood. And of course like all conspiracies, there are powers at be supposedly working to conceal all of this.

I think we should put flat earthers in a room wi th anti-vaxx ers and let them have a fight to the death. The winner gets cake.

Using science to prove Earth is flat... the mental gymnastics these people put themselves thru is fucking ridiculous.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 14:01 |

I’m convinced they’re still just trolling. More than a few minutes of self-directed questions poke holes in any other answer, lest it be something even more complex, like a 4 dimensional torus .

Watched it last night, lol’d and felt sad.
Also spending $ 20k on a laser gyroscope to learn the earth does in fact rotate 15 degrees an hour, is a Darwin award for your wallet.

What about flat Mars/Jupiter etc? I had heard of the flat earth society in the 80's as a kid, and assumed it was a joke/excuse to get together and drink beer. Now its serious.

I truly truly truly believed Flat Earthers were just a fun, anachronistic playgroup, sort of like a steampunk convention or Renaissance Faire people. You know, just to see how much fun they could have with the concept as a thought exercise, or a satire of conspiracy theorists (since a flat earth would be the most easily disproved of all; unlike the moon landings, the 9/11 inside job, etc)

You kid, but my room mate believes this (and my other crazy things) with full sincerity.
He is into all kinds of conspiracy theories, but funny enough, he laughs at flat earthers and the anti vaxers.

Hollow earth is definitely interesting, I’m into conspiracy stuff, but nothing really makes me believe any of it is legitimate.

Nothing makes me believe any of the conspiracies are legitimate either.
That doesn’t sop my roommate from trying to convince me and “See the light!”. Some days are better than others though.

I put off watching that for a couple of days because I figured it would annoy more than entertain. It was about 50/50 for me... Fascinating/ infuriating, that people are the way they are.
I did however, appreciate the part where actual scientists are asking the community not to cast out people with such far fetched ideas, as they could be an asset with the right guidance.
I think that’s a tall order, but nicer than saying, “people that think the earth is flat are basement dwelling idiots.” Even though that is my general opinion.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 14:40 |
|
The only good part of the documentary is the shots with the group of actual scientists about the superiority complex of science. And when they discuss the two psychological phenomena of not wanting to call your self the expert when you are and being an expert when you are a novice.
![]() 02/26/2019 at 14:43 |

The tricky part of doing that is the argument of incredulity. I don’t believe it, therefore it is false/fake. I think that is the core issue. If they didn’t hold that belief you could use logic. Once they stick to that, logic no longer helps.

You are part of the conspiracy by using reverse-reverse psychology. Next you’ll be telling me that vapor trails are a hoax. You are a piece of crap. Now, I need to go drink some fluoride.

It’s multiple intersecting problems. The usual conspiracy stuff (which I’ve explained before on this blog surely) but I think the key
is that these people have a spacial awareness problem, like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Coupled with good ol’ paranoia of course.

Agreed. It’s amazing to hear the way that flat earth believers convey in so many words that they don’t care that their believe isn’t logic based. If you look at the fight paths in the southern hemisphere....WTF man!

There is a senior manager at work, who will say “i don’t believe the ___ experts, how do they know....” and it is always followed by something that could be quickly searched on wiki and have a detailed explination how it works.
Last one “how do they know dinosaurs were killed by an asteroid” and everytime i have a mini debate, do i stay silent or show how much a moron he is?”
To which something truely dumb was said by another manager “did you know __ doesn’t believe in dinosaurs.... thinks they’re too big”

I always fall on the side of letting people get deep into their opinion then pointing out how wrong it is when they can’t back themselves out. I won’t let stupid people run the world if I can help it.
